St. Louis' NPR affilliate has rebranded. The station, which for about the past dozen years has billed itself as "90.7 KWMU, your station for in-depth news and intelligent talk", is now "Saint Louis Public Radio".
The station's General Manager Tim Eby produced this video explaining the action.

KWMU Update
The Riverfront Times has updated it's readers on KWMU.
The alternative newspaper wrote last spring about the management "style" of former GM Patty Wente. The article helped to drive her from the position after an investigation was launched by the University of Missouri which owns the St. Louis NPR affiliate. Since then Tim Eby has taken over as the boss of the station which resides on the UMSL campus.
The latest RFT article also reports KWMU with it's highest ever rating in the fall Arbitron book.

KWMU Hires New General Manager
KWMU Radio has named Tim Eby of Columbus it's new boss. Eby replaces Patty Wente who parted ways with the station and University of Missouri - St. Louis back in June. For the announcement visit KWMU's Web Page.

KWMU Update
KWMU Radio completed the final interview today of the fourth of four finalists to be the station's new General Manager. The successful candidate will succeed Patty Wente who was terminated by the University of Missouri - St. Louis in early June. Mike Dunn of sister station KBIA in Columbia has been serving in the interim.
The four hopefuls are Ben Fry of Little Rock, Dave Ervin of St. Louis, Erik Nycklemoe of St. Paul and Tim Eby of Columbus. An announcement of the station's new boss is expected in the coming days.
In another note, it's a little tardy, but the powers that be at the University have decided the future home of the station will be in St. Louis' Grand Center. The decision was made public by Vice Chancellor Martin Leifeld,
"Over the past months, the station and the university have explored several options in-depth, for the new physical location for the station. After considerable review, evaluation, and the blessings of various stakeholders that include the University of Missouri – St. Louis’ faculty and staff, I am pleased to announce that KWMU and UM-St. Louis will be joining the thriving cultural neighborhood at Grand Center! We are very excited about the new possibilities for collaboration that this alliance will foster and also hope the University and the station can play an exciting role in the continued revitalization of this vibrant area".

As you can tell by reading this blog I am a beer drinker. It appears as if Joe Alioto is striking a blow for "Joe Six Pack. Alioto has filed suit to block the Anheuser Busch - InBev merger.

More on KWMU
KWMU has stabilized and employees at the St. Louis NPR affiliate have settled in under interim manager Mike Dunn. Dunn went on the "Saint Louis on the Air" program a little over a week ago and handled listeners calls for an hour outlining his view of the station's role. There are reports too the station will soon start an evening local news magazine. Already, management has done away with the 7:04 p.m. newscast after the highly rated "All Things Considered".
In the meantime, the amount of interest in this story and hits on this blog have been much more than I would have anticipated. Good journalism precludes reporting on one's self but in this case I am going to make an exception. So, please indulge me.
This blog has had more hits on this story than anything else I've posted in the last three years. Hits have come repeatedly from the West Coast, East Coast and all over the nation and the readers are returning for more information. So, thank you for taking the time to check in here.

Fallout at KWMU
Meteorologist Dave Murray is one of the first casualties of the management change at KWMU. Murray had been delivering drive time forecasts for the station since long time meteorologist Ben Abell retired last fall.
Reportedly, critics of Murray did not believe his employment at the local Fox TV affiliate, fit with KWMU's affiliation with NPR.

Wente Terminated at KWMU
KWMU Radio General Manager Patty Wente was relieved of her management responsibilities on Monday afternoon. The Chancellor of the University of Missouri St. Louis, Tom George,informed the staff of the decision about five o'clock and was accompanied to the station by two university attorney's where he met with employees.
In the meantime, the station reportedly will continue to function as usual until a permanent GM can be hired. George told employees the General Manager at sister station KBIA in Columbia, Mike Dunn, will take the job in an interim role. KBIA plays predominantly classical music, but he is not expected to change the all news/talk format that has been successful at KWMU.
Wente apparently is not yet willing to talk to reporters about the development.

The Riverfront Times which broke the story of the original investigation, splashed the development on it's web site and made reference to it's initial story in saying Wente had been "fired". (The link is below this in my original post).
The St. Louis-Post Dispatch buried the story in it's entertainment section. The logic for this probably being the Post didn't want to admit the weekly "Alternative" newspaper kicked it's butt journalistically with the original feature. And the St. Louis TV stations were out in the cold until they saw it in print.

Trouble at a Local Radio Station
The purpose of this blog is to provide a forum for criticism of the news media (especially the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, hence the name "The Anti-Post").
But, the Post isn't the only newspaper in the St. Louis area. The Riverfront Times is the local "alternative" paper. This week it has a critical article about the St. Louis NPR affiliate's general manager.
