Choices for President

While out on my daily walk the other day I came across the following bumper sticker:

"Choose One

A. Barack Obama

B. John McCain

C. "Poke in the eye with a sharp stick"

Re-Visiting a Fine Beer

I saw ODell's IPA in a local liquor store this week and couldn't pass up the chance to sample it again. The Fort Collins product was just as good this time as it was the last time I sampled it. It has a gold color, a great hoppy flavor and a nice finish, that to me, tastes like grapefruit. An excellent product.

This weekend at the neighbor's happy hour I was served another nice IPA. This one is called Long Hammer IPA from Red Hook Brewing. It's good but not in the same class as ODell's IPA. (Not many are). Long Hammer has a brass color to it. The smell of Cascade hops is present and finishes with a lemon like flavor. It was little more watery than I prefer but still a nice beer. Thanks to my great neighbor H for the sampling.

ESPN Strikes Again

If it's Sunday and the Red Sucks are playing the Yank This, then you know what the Sunday night game of the week is going to be. Yep, it's New York at Boston.

But, ESPN please explain why. These teams have been on numerous times this year and neither is in first place. No, that honor belongs to the Tampa Bay Rays. In addition there were more attractive match ups of better teams. The Marlins played the Cubs and the Braves played the Phillies. Both games are better match ups of teams that are in first place or contending for first place.

The reason they are on again is ratings generated by the two huge television markets. And that corresponds directly to dollars. So, the rest of us that live west of the Hudson River, are once again stuck watching these two teams play in prime time.

KSDK Screws Up Again

This past Monday the NBC TV affiliate in St. Louis pulled a bone head stunt that would have resulted in a journalism student failing a class.

The talking heads at the Gannet owned station said the shooter of a firemen (who later died) was the owner of the home from where the shots were fired. What??? The station reported the owner was the shooter. Well, they must have been clairvoyant because there was no way of knowing who the shooter was. The station could have reported the individual as the owner. But, to say the same individual was the shooter without any knowledge or verification at that point was just plain stupid and something a beginning journalism student wouldn't think of trying. The Sleaze Channel Five reporter should be fired for gross incompetence.

But, this is the type of behavior KSDK has engaged in for years. KSDK news would rather tell you it was first with a story than worry about getting it's facts straight.

Beaten....Again

The board room of Anheuser-Busch is barely a mile from the newsroom of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. But they might as well be thousands of miles apart, because the Post doesn't seem to have a clue what is going on with the InBev story.

The Post has been beaten repeatedly by out of town papers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times even though the world's biggest brewer is located in it's own back yard. Things were so bad this week the Post quoted The Wall Street Journal in it's stories.

Apparently, there is not much experience in the business reporting team at the Post-Dispatch. Also, sources at the Post say there isn't much love of the Post by the executive team at AB. That may be, but there are a lot of organizations that don't like the media. Good reporters figure out a way to get the job done. The bottom line is the Post is failing it's readers who pay for the publication. My guess is if the Post had some competition it wouldn't have this problem of getting beat repeatedly on local business stories by out of town media.

A Nice Hoppy Ale

I had the chance to drink a few Arcadia Ale Hopmouth Double IPAs while on vacation this past week. I had heard of it, but finally found it at a local spirit reseller.

As I've written before I am a hop head. But, this product of the Battle Creek, Michigan brewer surpassed my needs for a highly hop charged beer. The malts used by the brewers helped to balance the high hop load. The beer had a nice aroma to it when I drank it and the hops almost smelled flowery. It finished with the taste of citrus and what to me tasted like grapefruit.

If you like hopped up beers than you are going to love Arcadia's Hopmouth Double IPA.

The Joy of Summer Vacation

I have been on vacation for most of this week and it it sure beats the you know what out of getting up to an alarm clock and fighting traffic everyday just to get to the office.

I have had the chance to do some of my favorite things...play golf, hang out with friends and family and drink good beer.

In the past seven days I have played golf three times, been to a wedding, the reception that followed; a birthday party; an anniversary party and been out to dinner four times.

Congrats to G&H my neighbors on 50 years of marriage together. You are among the most hospitable and generous couples I know.

Happy Birthday to two year old L and his five year old sister I. Thanks to their Mom and Dad S&J for a great birthday party and get together for the family.

Congratulations to E&B on their wedding day today. I have known B since he was born and have come to meet and know E a little bit in the past couple of years. They will do very well together.

And thanks to all of my neighbors and golf buddies who have learned to put up with my poorly struck tee and iron shots. I love to play and to be outside but as I have probably told you before I am a terrible golfer. But, as poor as my game is I still love the game itself!

Happy Independence Day

Happy 232nd birthday to the greatest nation ever...The United States of America. And more importantly thank you to all of the brave troops stationed around the world defending the American way of life. I realize we are not the most beloved of countries, but why is that when some other nation gets in trouble or needs help, the US is always the first one it asks? And the United States never says no to someone in need.

232 years old and going strong. God Bless America!!!
