It's Been Worth the Wait

I finally got to sample a Dog Fish Head "60 Minute IPA" this evening and it is everything I expected it to be. The beer is a golden color and you can smell citrus and flowers in the bouquet. It has a hoppy taste but is very smooth as it goes down. This is a session beer by definition and the brew master at Dog Fish Head is to be complimented!

I had to drive an hour round trip and cross a state line to get it but it was well worth the drive. My only regret is it's not distributed in Missouri. Hey Dogfish Head; there are a lot of us here in the Show-Me-State that would be more than happy to support your business if all of your offerings are this fine!

It Wasn't Pretty...But It Was a Win

My beloved Mizzou Tigers knocked off Northwestern this evening in the Alamo Bowl by 30-23 count in overtime. But, the Tigers played an ugly, ugly ballgame and at times looked unprepared and not too interested in the game.

The key to the game was a missed extra point by the Northwestern kicker early in the third quarter. If he makes the kick the Wildcats win the game 24-23 in regulation. And, you have to give credit to Tiger receiver Jeremy Maclin for a 75 yard punt return late in the second quarter that brought the Tigers even at ten each at halftime.

The real star of the game and MVP in my book (The media gave it to Maclin) is Sean Witherspoon of the Tiger defense. Witherspoon had 13 tackles and came up with big plays time after time. When someone needed to step up "Spoon" did so.

The win gives Missouri it's first back to back ten win seasons and a 22-6 record in the past two years. And it is the second bowl victory of 2009. The first was Mizzou's win over Arkansas 363 days ago. So, to wrap this up, "How 'Bout Them Tigers"!

MIZZOU-RAH!!!

Mercifully...It's Over

The St. Louis Rams ended their season this afternoon, just like they did the past nine weeks, by losing. The Rams came from behind to take a lead in the game but then blew it when they let the Atlanta Falcons roar back and beat them 31-27.

The Rams end the season at 2-14 and with ten consecutive losses to wrap up the season. It is the most losses in the teams long history. New management will have it's hand full this spring trying to evaluate talent and see where the team is headed in 2009. But, for now all I can says is thank God this awful season is finished.

Who Are These Bozos?

I am off of work today and while flipping channels came across Fox "News".

Four talking heads have not been reporting but rather "speculating" on the news. As an example they are "covering" the story of a little girl whose remains have been found. But, these morons are now speculating as to the cause of death of the little girl and what impact that will have on the prosecution of the case. Not to worry, the anchor and the so called "expert" are trying it on air as I type this. I have never seen such shoddy journalism, or more accurately lack of journalism. Were this the "Gong Show" they would have already been yanked off the stage.

Three More Seasonal Brews

My journey to Christmas continues with three more beers I tasted last night and this evening. I tried the Boulevard Nutcracker Ale last night and it was as good as last year's batch if not a little better. It has a dark red/ mahoggany color to it. It has that winter ale smell of toast. And the taste is malty but it doesnt end with a big rush of hops like others I've tasted in this category. Being a hop head it's not exactly what I wanted but it is still a nice effort by the folks over in Kansas City.

About an hour ago I sampled Shipyard's Prelude Ale (I think it's supposed to mean the prelude before Christmas). It is an English style Ale, rich and nutty. But, like many of my favorites it finishes strong with a hoppy finale.

As I write this I am drinking the best of this style I have tasted yet this year. (It may be unfair to compare this to others because it is more an IPA than a Winter Ale, but...). It is
Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale. And it is good. It has a copper color and has an aroma of citrus and pine. While similar to an IPA it also has a nice malty flavor when it first hits your tongue. It is awesome.

Let the Healing Begin

The St. Louis Rams who are in the midst of yet another dismal season have accepted the resignation of the head of Football Operations Jay Zygmunt. The media release called it a mutual "agreement". Zygmunt has presided over two of the worst seasons of Rams football in the teams fabled history. In addition, Rams President John Shaw is expected to have a diminished role in the teams future. These actions are apparently being orchestrated by new owner Chip Rosenbloom. Rosenbloom succeeded his step mother the late Georgia Frontiere.

So, what does this mean to Rams fans? Well, for starters Billy Devaney will take over the operations of the team. The book is out on Devaney, but the dismissal of Zygmunt is seen as a move in the right direction by many long time St. Louis season ticket holders. Zygmunt had been involved in the deal that brought Marshall Faulk to St. Louis late in the 90s. Faulk and the Rams went on to win the 2000 Super Bowl against Tennessee. But, in recent years Zygmunt feuded with former head coach Mike Martz and draft director Charley Armey. So, from a fans point of view, it is perceived at this point as a good move by the ownership.

Christmas/Winter Ales

It's no secret. I love Christmas. I love the season and all of the festivities that go with it. One of the things I have found over the past few years is that Christmas time also brings out a lot of seasonal beers in the so called Christmas/Winter Ale style. I made a trip to my favorite liquor store yesterday and found a host of offerings I plan to sample over the next few days.

I started with two of them last night. The first was Anchor's Christmas Ale. It was one of the first Christmas style beers I ever tasted and it is just as good this year as the first time I sampled it. It is almost a Mahogany in color and has an aroma of malt, citrus and spice. The taste is almost that of molasses with a hint of citrus. It finishes strongly with a bitter hop taste.

The second was New Belgium's 2 Below. It is orangish in color. It has an aroma of toasted bread, citrus and even a little chocolate. The taste is that toasted white bread and a wild flower hoppiness. It also is quite good. But, if I had to choose between the two I drank last night, I would go with the Anchor Christmas Ale.

...But It's Cold Outside

Winter has officially arrived...and when I walked out the door to go to church about 7:30 it felt like it. The wind chill was -15 and the actual temperature was just 6 degrees. But, it's warmed up now....all the way to 14.

Two Down...Thirty Two to go

The Bowl season is upon us again. It began in earnest today with four games. If you do the math from the headline above there are 34 bowl games this season. And that's way too many. Teams like Notre Dame are playing in a bowl with a six and six record. They just don't belong. They were drilled by mediocre teams all season long. And what's just as bad is they aren't the only 6-6 team playing in the post season.

The NCAA needs to change it's rules and require a team to have a winning record in order to play in a bowl. But, the realities are that's not likely to change as long as there is money to be made from television (namely ABC/ESPN) and fans willing to buy tickets to yet another game.

December 13, 2008

Who drank all the Christmas Ale?

I was at the Schlafly Tap Room in downtown St. Louis the other evening. When I got there I had planned on getting an Imperial Pint of the seasonal Christmas Ale. But, to my surprise and disappointment there was none. It had all been consumed. Now, in years past it has lasted until after Christmas. I tried to find out why it had already sold out, but the bartenders, B & T, told me they really didn't know. At least I got to taste it before Thanksgiving. Too, bad there isn't more of it on tap. Maybe, I can find some in bottles at a grocery or liquor store. Or, perhaps Schlafly management has set some aside for the 17th Anniversary party later this month.

KWMU Hires New General Manager

KWMU Radio has named Tim Eby of Columbus it's new boss. Eby replaces Patty Wente who parted ways with the station and University of Missouri - St. Louis back in June. For the announcement visit KWMU's Web Page.

Mizzou Gets Slaughtered

There was no doubt Saturday night who the better team was at Arrowhead Stadium. I knew Oklahoma would probably beat the stuffing out of Mizzou. After all, they've been pounding teams all season. The only thing I didn't like was Brad Stoops running up the score so his team could score 60 points in five straight games. The whole BCS ratings thing needs to be changed so margin of victory and total points don't play a factor.

Does OU belong in the national championship game? I don't know. Texas beat them in mid October and they both have the same record. So, my thought is Texas is the better team and deserves a shot at the national title.

Mizzou ends the regular season at 9-4 and is headed to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. It's a decent bowl, but Missouri should be playing in the Gator Bowl on New Year's Day and not Nebraska. Missouri has a better record and beat Nebraska 59-10 back in October. But, apparently game results are meaningless in the world of Bowl executives.

Upset at Arrowhead

My beloved Missouri Tigers got beaten at Arrowhead Stadium yesterday afternoon 40-37 by their arch-rivals, the Kansas Chickenhawks in a major upset.

The Tigers offense didn't show up until the second quarter and the defensive secondary never did. As a result the Tigers found themselves in a 19-7 hole midway through the second quarter. Mizzou rallied back twice to take the lead in the fourth quarter but couldn't hold on to it either time. On a fourth and seven play the Tigers blitzed and got burnt by KU Quarterback Todd Reesing. on a 26 yard touchdown pass to Kerry Meier where Strong Safety Justin Garrett got beat by five yards. It's not the first time Garrett has been beaten badly this season. But then he's not alone, the secondary has had serious problems all year.

The Tigers finish 5-3 and are North Division champs for the second year in a row by virtue of having beaten up on Nebraska in October. Nebraska also had a 5-3 record in the division.

Next stop for the Tigers is Arrowhead again Saturday night in the Big XII Championship game. The Tigers will have their hands full to say the least.

I am Thankful

This is a day late, but I have so much for which to be thankful. Number one on my list is family. We were able to get together yesterday at my Mother's home with 14 people in and out the door at various times. Without family I would be lost. From the generation before me to my siblings and in-laws, their children and their children I am so glad to call them all family.

I am thankful for the brave men and women of our armed forces who are serving our nation overseas at this difficult time. They are my heroes. To them I owe a debt of gratitude that I can never repay. So to them I say may God keep you out of harm's way and bring you home safely. I also pray that God changes the hearts of world leaders so there might be peace and you return home sooner than later.

I am also thankful for my:

-health
-many friends
-good neighbors who are so generous. I have written of them before but D&V and G&H are always so kind to me. D&V fed me breakfast Wednesday morning before we headed out to play golf and let me tell you; D can cook. The homemade biscuits were awesome!
-Church and church family
-My country; this is slightly redundant, but I can think of no where else I would rather live even with the many domestic problems we face this year
-job; yes, I know I complain about it, but I am truly blessed to have a good job in a tough economic time that I really enjoy going to everyday and that they pay me to do.
-my home; I take it for granted. But, it is always dry and warm and more than I deserve.
-my car; it's a year old now, but I still think it is the best I have ever had and still love to get in and drive it.
-second job; one that let's me pick the hours I want to work and that is also easy
-hope for the future; this may sound strange but I still have half of my 401k and IRAs. I could complain but that is still a lot more than those less fortunate.

For all of these I say thank you God! You have blessed me so much more richly than I have ever deserved!

From Bad to Ugly

The St. Louis Rams got their tails handed to them again this week, 27-3 by the Chicago Bears. That's no surprise. The Rams have given up on their season and mailed it in again. But, now it's getting ugly. Offensive lineman Richie Incognito has taken to taunting Rams fans. Those are the same people who are paying his salary.

After the game yesterday, Incognito was being booed by the departing crowd. He had been penalized during the game which drew the wrath of those in attendance. As Incognito left the field, he removed his helmet and cupped his hand to his ear. In effect telling the Rams customers I can't hear you...boo me a little louder.

Today Rams head coach Jim Haslett said he had not seen the incident. In addressing the situation with reporters Haslett said Incognito would not be disciplined. This is the same Incognito the NFL fined $35,000 six weeks ago for verbally abusing a game official.

KWMU Update

KWMU Radio completed the final interview today of the fourth of four finalists to be the station's new General Manager. The successful candidate will succeed Patty Wente who was terminated by the University of Missouri - St. Louis in early June. Mike Dunn of sister station KBIA in Columbia has been serving in the interim.

The four hopefuls are Ben Fry of Little Rock, Dave Ervin of St. Louis, Erik Nycklemoe of St. Paul and Tim Eby of Columbus. An announcement of the station's new boss is expected in the coming days.

In another note, it's a little tardy, but the powers that be at the University have decided the future home of the station will be in St. Louis' Grand Center. The decision was made public by Vice Chancellor Martin Leifeld,

"Over the past months, the station and the university have explored several options in-depth, for the new physical location for the station. After considerable review, evaluation, and the blessings of various stakeholders that include the University of Missouri – St. Louis’ faculty and staff, I am pleased to announce that KWMU and UM-St. Louis will be joining the thriving cultural neighborhood at Grand Center! We are very excited about the new possibilities for collaboration that this alliance will foster and also hope the University and the station can play an exciting role in the continued revitalization of this vibrant area".

Congratulations to the Best!

Congratulations to Albert Pujols! "El Hombre" was named the 2008 National League Most Valuable Player today. I consider myself fortunate to see Pujols play almost every game and he is one of those hitters you always stop what your doing to watch him hit when he comes to the plate.

The Cardinals finished fourth in the National League Central Division this year, but it would have been worse without his offensive and defensive presence. And Pujols has developed into one of the top fielding first basemen in the game.

Congratulations Number 5! The award is well deserved and caps off a great, great season.

And then There's the Worst

The St. Louis Rams continue to play as if they're dedicated to not just playing horrible football but letting the whole country know there is no doubt they are the worst team in the NFL. Yesterday the Lambs were victimized by the San Francisco 49ers 35-16.

It's not worth ripping on the Rams because they appear to not care any more. The defense doesn't want to hit and the offense doesn't want to get hit. I thought there was some hope for this squad after the wins against the Redskins and Cowboys and a good game against the Patriots in Foxboro. But, now they are just pathetic. Whatever spark was there when Jim Haslett was named head coach is gone and has been the last few weeks.

I wrote a month ago that the problems start at the top. Until team President John Shaw addresses the internal problems there's not much hope for this franchise.

The Christmas Ale is As Good as Ever

I had a chance to try Schlafly's 2008 version of Christmas Ale last night. And, yes it is as good as I recall it being in the past. To borrow from the Schlafly web page on this fine beer, Christmas Ale is "A full-bodied amber ale to spice up the holidays. ‘Tis the season to enjoy this rich and flavorful ale made with orange peel, cloves and spicy hops."

The description is good but believe me not as good as the beer. I plan on having my share of this fine nectar in the next two months.

North Division Champions

The Missouri Tigers rolled last night over an out manned Iowa State football team. The final score was 52-20 Mizzou. The Tigers offense got un-tracked early and the defense stepped up too. William Moore (IMHO the best defensive player on the squad) finally got a touch, with a pick of an errant Iowa State pass in the second quarter. The game was never close or in doubt as Mizzou led 21-0 early in the second quarter.

The victory runs the Tigers record to 8-2. Maybe more importantly it puts to an end a long streak of bad luck in Ames. Missouri has always had it's problems winning there. Maybe this is the start of a long streak for the Tigers.

And, oh yeah before I forget, the Tigers have clinched the Big XII North Division! That means the final regular season game in two weeks against Kansas is meaningless. The Big XII Championship game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on December 6Th. MIZ - ZOU RAH!!!

November 09, 2008

Tigers Play Sloppy but Win

My beloved Missouri Tigers won 41-24 last night but didn't play all that well against Kansas State. The Tigers couldn't get un-tracked in the first quarter and it was apparent that Chase Daniel missed his favorite receiver in Chase Coffman. (Coffman is out with turf-toe).

But Mizzou moved the ball in the second quarter and the score at half was 24-3. The final is a little deceiving because K-State scored two meaningless touchdowns in the last two minutes with Missouri's second string defense on the field.

Maybe the cold had something to do with it. It was the first time Mizzou had played a game this year with the temperature around the freezing mark. And YES it was darn cold sitting in the stands with a wind chill in the 20s.

Thoughts on the Election

I had a hard time deciding whom to vote for in Tuesday's Presidential election. Well, on the way to the polls I decided to vote for Obama. But, then while I was in line I waffled and decided to vote for McCain. But, then when I got to the electronic machine I hit the button for Obama. And when the finalize vote button came up I pushed the vote button and my ballot was cast for the Democrat. For that matter I voted for Democrats in all but one statewide race. That was a first for me. I also voted against every single proposition and amendment on the ballot. I am tired of special interests writing their own legislation and then selling it as a benefit to the general public. I also am tired of ever increasing sales taxes. They are regressive and I will blog on this when time permits.

-I live in Missouri which has been a bellwether state for the last 100 years. But, if the recount holds up, McCain will win by the smallest of margins and break a 52 year streak of Missourians picking the winner. My guess is the vote margin will stand up and probably grow.

-In Senate races in Minnesota and Alaska I have to laugh. In Minnesota a carpet-bagger comedian appears to have lost his race to incumbent senator Norm Coleman. Former Saturday Nite Live comic Al Franken was only 500 votes behind Coleman with three million votes having been counted. If Coleman survives a recount, he would have the...excuse me...uh...last laugh.

-And in Alaska an 84 year old man who was convicted by a federal grand jury ten days ago appears to have won re-election to the Senate. But, again that race is so close there will be a mandated recount of the ballots. Republican Ted Stevens is ahead at this point but absentee ballots are not yet fully counted. He appears to have beaten Democrat Mark Begich. Which makes you wonder what the heck were people in Alaska thinking? If Stevens isn't the poster boy for term limits then no one is. But, could this be a blessing in disguise for Sarah Palin if Stevens wins and then is kicked out by a Democratically controlled congress? Palin would appear to be the heir apparent for the seat if Stevens gets the boot.

Something I've Been Wanting to Write

In all of the hoopla of the campaign and being on call for the past several weeks I have been remiss in blogging about one of my favorite things...good beer!

My annual favorite from Schlafly Brewing in St. Louis, Hop Harvest, has come and gone. It's brewed as Oregon Hops ripen and then dry hopped. It makes for a very high IBU, but oh is it "drinkable". (By,the way, since when does Anheuser-Busch know anything about drinkability)? This year's batch may have been the best ever.

A new favorite is Charleville's Tornado Alley Amber Ale. My good neighbors H&G went on a road trip and served it at their last get together. Charleville is made in a small town about an hour south of St. Louis. It was the first time I had heard of the brewery and the brew master certainly knows his stuff. This Ale has a reddish color and finished nicely. It comes in a 21.5 ounce bottle.

It's Over!

Finally...relief from the inane political ads...flooded mailboxes...overdone analysis and the invasive Robo-calls from politicians. I am so glad that this marathon campaign for the Presidency that started over a year and a half ago is over. Now, just count the votes and let's move on.

Seniors Get in the Way

The lines moved fairly quick this morning at my polling place. But, there were a lot of Senior Citizens already there. I've noticed that Seniors are always there before the polls open. Why do they get in the way of working people who have only a limited amount of time to vote on their way to work? The Seniors have all day to vote. It must be a lot of Seniors are up at the crack of dawn every day and know they can go whenever they want. But, I wish a few of them were more considerate of us working stiffs.

A Win Is A Win

Mizzou squeaked out a win on the road a short time ago over the Baylor Bears 31-28 down in Waco, Texas. This past spring when I looked at the schedule I figured this would be an easy win for the Tigers. But, Baylor appears to be better than advertised. Tiger QB Chase Daniel threw three touchdowns but also had two interceptions. Those interceptions came back to bite Mizzou in the butt. While the win wasn't by the margin anticipated it's still a win on the road which is always tough in the Big XII. It's back home next week to take on Kansas State.

Philadelphia Phillies World Series Champions

Congratulations to the Phillies and their entire organization on last nights win over the Tampa Bay Rays. The last three and a half inning played last night were as good as the rest of the series. The Phillies turned out to be the better team in this short series. And that's what they pay off on. Whoever wins four first is the champ. I really think if they played the Series ten times, both of these teams could win five. They were both that good. I think the difference for the Phillies was closer Brad Lidge.

I got a kick out of the fans at the ballpark in the post game hype when trophies were being presented. The knowledgeable fans from the "City of Brotherly Love" booed the snot out of Commissioner Bud Selig. Those people who sat in a freezing rain on Monday night, and then had to come back to winter cold last night because of Selig's arrogance, had every right to boo the moron who calls the shots at MLB.

October 29, 2008

Random thoughts on the World Series

It's been an interesting World Series to this point. The Rays and Phillies are both fun teams. I have enjoyed what I have been able to see of it. But Major League Baseball (MLB), as I have written before, has sold it's soul to the devil (Fox Sports). Otherwise, I and many, many millions of others could have stayed awake to see a great game three last Saturday night. I finally turned it off at midnight. Think about the poor fans in the Eastern time zone who had to sit up until almost two in the morning to see the finish.

The umpiring has been bad and so has the weather. Why is it that one guy can change the rules of a great game that has been played for years? Each umpire calling home plate is a little different. But, the rules book clearly defines a strike and a ball. So, why don't they all call it the same? And, it's not just the plate umpire. A horrible call was made at first base Saturday night and an even worse one made on Sunday night at third base. If these guys are the best baseball has...then it is hurting. As far as the weather Commissioner Bud Selig says they will stay in Philadelphia until Thanksgiving if needed. Gee, I wonder how that makes the Rays and their families feel? You can almost hear the execs in the NFL suite laughing from here.

Despite the poor management by Selig and his moron advisers, the game thrives. Just think how much more popular it would be if someone who knew what they were doing was actually calling the shots.

Where are the Cops?

I mentioned earlier I went up to Columbia yesterday for the Mizzou football game. One thing that hasn't changed even with people more aware of fuel prices and energy consumption is the blatant dis-respect for the speed limit on Interstate highways.

I set my cruise on 70 both ways and with the exception of a few tractor trailers I was passed by everyone. And the worst offenders seem to be the owners of BMWs, Mercedes and Cadillac SUVS, Hummers and other gas hogs.

Why am I and others who drive the speed limit or drive smaller cars or hybrids trying to conserve energy while these hogs do as they please? I think it's time for the state to get serious about fining those people who speed along in these monster vehicles. Maybe if the state used a multiplier on speeding tickets like it does using horsepower for license renewal it might slow some people down. And, I don't mean an $80 or $100 ticket. I mean $250-$300 speeding tickets. And while the law is being changed let's double the points on everyone for speeding. That would send a message. It's time to get serious.

But, it won't happen because many of the lawyers who write the laws own the gas guzzlers and won't want to deal with it.

Sign Poll...Update

A couple of weeks ago I wrote that based on campaign yard signs Barack Obama was well ahead of John McCain in my neighborhood or at least along the routes I walk. But, the gap has narrowed. I have seen a lot more signs put up by McCain backers in the last week or so. There are still more Obama signs, but it is a lot closer with just nine days until election day.

A Rebound Game

Mizzou bounced back last night shutting down the Colorado Buffaloes 58-0. It was a great evening to be outside watching the Tigers and the house was sold out.

To say the Buffaloes are a bad team is an understatement. But, Mizzou played it's best game since Nebraska three weeks ago. Chase Coffman was outstanding and set the NCAA record for most catches in a career by a tight end. (And he has four and up to as many as six games left in his career in Columbia). Coffman made one of the most remarkable catches I have ever seen in the first quarter at the back of the end zone to start the Tigers' scoring onslaught. Then in the second quarter he leaped over a Colorado defender to tack on another ten yards on a play that was already a first down.

The Defense looked good, but still has some issues to work out if it has hopes of going to a good bowl game. All in all a great night to be outside in mid Missouri celebrating homecoming with 68,000 of my "closest friends".

October 20, 2008

...and Beaten Up by the Longhorns

It wasn't much fun Saturday night to watch the Tigers get their butts kicked by a powerful Texas Longhorn football team. There's no need to revisit the score. I just hope that the country didn't tune out before the second half, because Mizzou's offense finally got un-tracked. Still Texas was by far the better team and their foot speed stopped the Missouri spread offense just as it did the Oklahoma offense.

Oh well, I guess I wont be going to a BCS game in January.

October 12, 2008

Whooped by the Cowboys

I've written at length about my beloved Missouri Tigers. And you would be correct to say I have done my share of bragging on them. Well last night, they got beaten a better team. Oklahoma State came into Columbia as a double digit underdog and stuffed Mizzou's high power offense 28-23. The Cowboys forced three Chase Daniel interceptions in the second half and allowed the Tigers to convert only two of nine third downs all evening. With the loss the Tigers fall to 5-1 and number 11 in the AP poll.

Oklahoma State is very good and may be good enough to win the Big XII conference. I hope the Tigers can win the North division and play the Cowboys again the first weekend of December.

The Tigers now prepare for the newly #1 ranked Texas Longhorns this Saturday in Austin. Texas got there by knocking off the former number one Oklahoma Sooners in the "Red River Rivalry" game yesterday afternoon 45-35.

Indebting Future Generations

I have been so busy with other things, that I really haven't had time to write about the US government giveaway to the nation's financial industry.

I can see the need for propping up the industry to avoid a terrible recession or worse. But, on the other hand I don't think we should be borrowing money from the Chinese and other nations who don't particularly care about our future.

I also dislike the fact that not only will my generation, and our children's generation, our grand-children's generation and their children and grand-children pay for it, but that those generations will most likely not have the standard of living that my generation has experienced.

I am still trying to figure the whole thing out. But, one thing I am disgusted by is a $200 million earmark for the Virgin Islands rum industry. Give a politician an inch and he'll take a mile.

A Century and Counting

It's been a century since the Chicago Cubs have won a World Series. And they won't be winning one this year either. The Scrubs completed their annual meltdown last night, being swept by the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

See you next year Cubbies. Have a good winter.

How 'Bout Them Tigers

My beloved Missouri Tigers stomped Nebraska last night 52-17. The Tigers scored on ten of 12 possessions and Nebraska was clueless most 0f the game about what Missouri was doing.

The win is particularly sweet to me since it had been 30 years since Mizzou had won in Lincoln. This one win isn't a payback but it's a start.

For years Nebraska was said to have some of the best fans in the country. Well, apparently losing has changed some of their "great" fans into obnoxious asses. And the same can be said of at least one Nebraska player. Chase Daniel, Mizzou's quarterback, said he had extra motivation last night after being spit on by a Cornhusker player. Daniel took the high road and refused to name the player, but also made the allegation that Nebraska is one of the dirtiest football teams he has played.

The bottom line is Missouri 52 - Nebraska 17. Mizzou 5-0; Nebraska 3-2

Fear and Loathing in Chicago

Now the sound of the choking has doubled in the Windy City. The "Scrubs" looked even worse behind their "ace" crazy Carolos Zambrano then they did in Game 1. And last night the South Siders were handed their second loss in a row by the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Cubbies will probably be finished off by very early Sunday morning and the same fate awaits the the White Sox tomorrow. Bye Bye Chicago.

October 01, 2008

What's That Sound Coming from Chicago's North Side?

I watched the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs tonight 7-2 in the first round of Major League Baseball's playoffs. The North-Siders had everything going their way and still blew a lead. The Cubs made it through the National League season without having their August or September swoon and finished with the best record in the league.

But, every year you know the Cubbies are good for a collapse. It started a little later than most years, but I think that's the sound I hear tonight coming from the North Side.

Linehan is Out

St. Louis Rams coach Scott Linehan got axed this morning after the Rams suffered another one sided defeat yesterday at the hands of the Buffalo Bills.

It was expected, as I wrote yesterday. But, the larger problem is the team's lack of talent. That ultimately falls on the head of Jay Zygmunt, the team's general manager. Zygmunt fought former coach Mike Martz for several years before solidifying his power base as GM and taking ultimate responsibility for the team's annual draft.

Zygmunt's drafts have been poor. If the owners of the team, the Rosenbloom children, really want to improve the product they will get rid of Zygmunt and bring in a new general manager. The owners also need to review the performance of team president John Shaw as well.

Coach Linehan is on the hot seat

The Rams will play the Buffalo Bills later this afternoon. If the team loses it's fourth straight game, coach Scott Linehan could very well lose his job before the team has the week off for a bye next Sunday.

The Rams have been horrible at best this season. And now reports are coming out of the locker room of dissension among the players and a lack of faith in management decisions.

Add to this, the fight that took place for control of the franchise in the past and you can see why the organization is in chaos. If Linehan gets canned it's not his fault. But, like the old saying goes, you can't fire the whole team.

Sign Poll

I have noticed more campaign signs going up in advance of the Presidential Election in five weeks. When I walked my route through my middle class predominantly Republic subdivision on Friday I discovered eight Obama signs to only two for McCain. Four years ago, the number of signs for Bush and Kerry were evenly divided. Check back for updates on my "yard sign poll".

Leaning Towards Obama

As of this evening I am leaning heavily towards voting for Barack Obama for president.

The crisis being experienced by the financial markets and cost of a gallon of gasoline makes me believe it's time for change. My 401k has gotten killed in the last three quarters and the latest crisis makes it even less bearable. The thought of a continuation of Republican policies has me thinking enough is enough. In addition, the Democrats are running an effective campaign ad asking how John McCain can be a reformer when his top advisers are lobbyists for the industries in need of reform.

If the election were held today, (and I wish it were today and not in six weeks) I would vote for Obama.

Who Are These People

While watching the Nightly News this evening both John McCain and Barack Obama made reference to "The American People".

I know by definition who the American People are, but do the politicians. This term has been used for years. But, it makes me wonder how politicians at the national level really perceive this group called "The American People".

Do these high level politicos really know about the problems of the rest of us and what we have to deal with every day? Or are we just the taxpayers who have to be tolerated every four years when all the pol wants is a vote?

My guess is when someone at the national level uses the term "The American People" it is a reference to an undefined faceless inanimate object. Perhaps the candidates should really be thinking about "The American People" as 300 million living breathing human being with real and diverse problems, wants and needs.

Tigers Win....Rams Lose

So what else is new?

Mizzou beats Nevada 69-17 (tieing the university record for most points scored) and...

The Rams get stomped by the Giants 41-13. This team is not very good and may be worse than last years 3-13 squad. If that offensive line doesn't do it's job Mark Bulger is going to get seriously injured. I certainly hope not, but that line is bad.

Congratulations!!!

Congratulations to my oldest nephew R and his new wife S. They exchanged vows yesterday afternoon after dating for several years. They will do very well together.

The reception was a great time. Good music, good food, and good drink. But, most importantly good time spent with family.

Oh yeah, did I mention the music...it was great. Even, I (who really don't dance) ended up out on the dance floor. It was an afternoon I won't soon forget.

I Hope this Attorney is Successful

As you can tell by reading this blog I am a beer drinker. It appears as if Joe Alioto is striking a blow for "Joe Six Pack. Alioto has filed suit to block the Anheuser Busch - InBev merger.

KWMU reported on it this morning.

...The Rams Were Awful

As good as Missouri was this weekend the St. Louis Rams were just as bad.

I watched the first half of the game and the Rams were so bad I turned it off at halftime. The Eagles led the Rams 21-0 and it could have been much worse. I ended up taking a nap. It turned out to be a better use of time. The final score was Philadelphia 38 - St. Louis 3.

The Rams gave up 361 yards in passing to Donovan McNabb who had to feel as if he was back at Syracuse University. The St. Louis defensive line was that bad and got no pressure on McNabb all day. And, the Rams offensive line was just as awful. Unless something changes the Rams are going to be in for another long season.

Mizzou Rah...

My beloved Missouri Tigers are now 2-0 after beating up on Southeast Missouri State on Saturday night in Columbia by a final count of 52-3.

Now, in itself that isn't much cause for celebration. But the Tigers played well. And that combined with the season opening win over Illinois gives me hope as the team starts to build momentum towards what I hope is a national championship season. The first real test won't come until the first weekend in Lincoln, Nebraska. Missouri hasn't won there in 30 years. But, I am putting the cart before the horse.

This week the opponent will be Nevada. A division one team that has had success in the past and is well coached. This will be a better test and I look forward to the game.

Back to the Undecided Column

A week ago, after the Democratic National Convention I had made up my mind I would vote for Barack Obama for president. But, after the Republican National Convention this week I am not so sure. In fact, I am undecided.

I am impressed with Sarah Palin and her ability to cut through the BS. Ten days ago I was not too familiar with her. But, after taking on the oil industry and good old boys in Alaska her ability to reform has impressed me.

I also thought John McCain did a great job with his acceptance speech on Thursday night. I have always liked him because he is a true war hero and seems to put the nation first. But, if he in fact voted with George Bush II 90% of the time I have some reservations. I am researching his voting record. Why? Because I don't know that I believe the people putting out that statistic.

And I also think a lot of Joe Biden as a fighter. I never really thought of him as presidential material previously, but he can certainly express himself.

In the past I thought the choices for president were poor. (See George Bush, Jr and Al Gore). But this year, we have quality candidates running on both sides. I will post more as I weight the facts and make up my mind.

Where Did the Week Go?

Last Thursday night I told you I would have more time to post. Well, it turns out I was just as busy on vacation as I was working. In fact probably busier.

I have been all over the metropolitan area. I was able to play golf three times. I have gotten together with friends and family on several occasions. And I have had a chance to sample some of the areas better restaurants including a new microbrewery.

That new micro-brewery is Buffalo Brewing near the campus of a major area university. The value offered by this establishment is excellent. I know of no other place in the area where I can get a half chicken and two sides for $6.95. And the best thing about Buffalo Brewing is the beers I have sampled are very good!

The Rye IPA and the Belgium Dubbel were each good on both occasions I sampled them. It appears as if some of the existing micro-breweries in the region may need to re-think their prices. Long live Buffalo Brewing!

Poor Coverage

I don't know if you and your family have been watching the Democratic National Convention this week or not. I have to a certain extent, but have to say the network coverage has been lame.

The big three networks have shown an hour a night and have interrupted it at random with a host of commercials. (Yes, I know that is why they are in business, but the timing appears to be done at whim). And the so called "coverage" of the convention by the St. Louis television stations has been laughable.

The best coverage I have seen is that being provided by
C-SPAN. It has shown wall to wall coverage from the venues without any interruption. And without the inane commentary of people who would have you think they are smarter than you. Sure, at times C-SPAN's being there has been nothing but an infomercial for the Democratic party, but it also has provided live coverage of events that were blown off by the commercial networks.

If you care to see the best convention coverage there is, check it out next week when it covers the GOP convention in the Twin Cities.

D Day -1

This week started off rather peacefully at work. But, the last few days have been difficult at best. Dealing with attitudes of co-workers and a manager who didn't want to be at work today have not been pleasant.

But, the good news is at COB tomorrow I am on vacation for the next week. I hope I make it through the day without losing my cool.

With more time on my hands I will have some time to blog and get you up to speed on what has been happening in the local media and life in general. Stay tuned!

The Dog Days of Summer

The weather here has been nice for about a week and a half now...mild temperatures and no rain...but, still the "Dog Days" are upon us.

The local news media has done nothing in particular to distinguish itself and the national media has a pre-occupation with the Olympics in Beijing. I have not been following the games and find them to be overly commercialized. There is no where you can look in any of the venues that you're not smacked in the face by blatant commercialism. And this in a communist nation.

Sure, I realize someone has to pay the freight. But the number of spots and product placements is higher than I recall it in the past. I started to watch the opening ceremonies a week ago Friday night. But, then I turned it off when commercials started coming every five minutes.

Oh well, the games will be over this weekend...and then we can go back to watching bad television reruns. Gee, I can hardly wait.

More on Indian Pale Ales

I went to Paradise Valley Wine yesterday and stocked up on IPAs. Some of these I have tasted before and some are new to me.

The first beer I tasted was
Great Divide Brewing's Titan IPA. Great Divide is out of Colorado and there must be a large number of people in that state that value fine beer. Titan IPA starts off with a piney hop aroma and citrus hop flavor and finishes with a malt flavor that balances out the bitterness (IBU of 65).

The second IPA I tasted was
Acme IPA of North Coast Brewing in California. It's not quite as good as Titan IPA but still a nice beer. (Maybe I am biased because the higher the IBU, the more I like the brew). Acme has a pale Amber color. It checks in with an IBU of 55.

Choices for President

While out on my daily walk the other day I came across the following bumper sticker:

"Choose One

A. Barack Obama

B. John McCain

C. "Poke in the eye with a sharp stick"

Re-Visiting a Fine Beer

I saw ODell's IPA in a local liquor store this week and couldn't pass up the chance to sample it again. The Fort Collins product was just as good this time as it was the last time I sampled it. It has a gold color, a great hoppy flavor and a nice finish, that to me, tastes like grapefruit. An excellent product.

This weekend at the neighbor's happy hour I was served another nice IPA. This one is called Long Hammer IPA from Red Hook Brewing. It's good but not in the same class as ODell's IPA. (Not many are). Long Hammer has a brass color to it. The smell of Cascade hops is present and finishes with a lemon like flavor. It was little more watery than I prefer but still a nice beer. Thanks to my great neighbor H for the sampling.

ESPN Strikes Again

If it's Sunday and the Red Sucks are playing the Yank This, then you know what the Sunday night game of the week is going to be. Yep, it's New York at Boston.

But, ESPN please explain why. These teams have been on numerous times this year and neither is in first place. No, that honor belongs to the Tampa Bay Rays. In addition there were more attractive match ups of better teams. The Marlins played the Cubs and the Braves played the Phillies. Both games are better match ups of teams that are in first place or contending for first place.

The reason they are on again is ratings generated by the two huge television markets. And that corresponds directly to dollars. So, the rest of us that live west of the Hudson River, are once again stuck watching these two teams play in prime time.

KSDK Screws Up Again

This past Monday the NBC TV affiliate in St. Louis pulled a bone head stunt that would have resulted in a journalism student failing a class.

The talking heads at the Gannet owned station said the shooter of a firemen (who later died) was the owner of the home from where the shots were fired. What??? The station reported the owner was the shooter. Well, they must have been clairvoyant because there was no way of knowing who the shooter was. The station could have reported the individual as the owner. But, to say the same individual was the shooter without any knowledge or verification at that point was just plain stupid and something a beginning journalism student wouldn't think of trying. The Sleaze Channel Five reporter should be fired for gross incompetence.

But, this is the type of behavior KSDK has engaged in for years. KSDK news would rather tell you it was first with a story than worry about getting it's facts straight.

Beaten....Again

The board room of Anheuser-Busch is barely a mile from the newsroom of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. But they might as well be thousands of miles apart, because the Post doesn't seem to have a clue what is going on with the InBev story.

The Post has been beaten repeatedly by out of town papers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times even though the world's biggest brewer is located in it's own back yard. Things were so bad this week the Post quoted The Wall Street Journal in it's stories.

Apparently, there is not much experience in the business reporting team at the Post-Dispatch. Also, sources at the Post say there isn't much love of the Post by the executive team at AB. That may be, but there are a lot of organizations that don't like the media. Good reporters figure out a way to get the job done. The bottom line is the Post is failing it's readers who pay for the publication. My guess is if the Post had some competition it wouldn't have this problem of getting beat repeatedly on local business stories by out of town media.

A Nice Hoppy Ale

I had the chance to drink a few Arcadia Ale Hopmouth Double IPAs while on vacation this past week. I had heard of it, but finally found it at a local spirit reseller.

As I've written before I am a hop head. But, this product of the Battle Creek, Michigan brewer surpassed my needs for a highly hop charged beer. The malts used by the brewers helped to balance the high hop load. The beer had a nice aroma to it when I drank it and the hops almost smelled flowery. It finished with the taste of citrus and what to me tasted like grapefruit.

If you like hopped up beers than you are going to love Arcadia's Hopmouth Double IPA.

The Joy of Summer Vacation

I have been on vacation for most of this week and it it sure beats the you know what out of getting up to an alarm clock and fighting traffic everyday just to get to the office.

I have had the chance to do some of my favorite things...play golf, hang out with friends and family and drink good beer.

In the past seven days I have played golf three times, been to a wedding, the reception that followed; a birthday party; an anniversary party and been out to dinner four times.

Congrats to G&H my neighbors on 50 years of marriage together. You are among the most hospitable and generous couples I know.

Happy Birthday to two year old L and his five year old sister I. Thanks to their Mom and Dad S&J for a great birthday party and get together for the family.

Congratulations to E&B on their wedding day today. I have known B since he was born and have come to meet and know E a little bit in the past couple of years. They will do very well together.

And thanks to all of my neighbors and golf buddies who have learned to put up with my poorly struck tee and iron shots. I love to play and to be outside but as I have probably told you before I am a terrible golfer. But, as poor as my game is I still love the game itself!

Happy Independence Day

Happy 232nd birthday to the greatest nation ever...The United States of America. And more importantly thank you to all of the brave troops stationed around the world defending the American way of life. I realize we are not the most beloved of countries, but why is that when some other nation gets in trouble or needs help, the US is always the first one it asks? And the United States never says no to someone in need.

232 years old and going strong. God Bless America!!!

It's Been an Incredibly Busy Month

June is the month of graduations and weddings. And that's what I've been up to for the past four weeks; going to weddings and graduation parties. They have all been fun but I finally had a weekend to do what I want. It hasn't allowed a whole lot of time for posting outside of the KWMU story. I have been in six states in the past 23 days and it is good to be home.

Life is good again. I have completed most of the project dumped on me by my boss and have earned management's gratitude.

As I write this the rain has stopped. I am sitting out on my patio working wirelessly on an 80 degree day with the sun shining while I barbecue chicken. It's good to be home.

More on KWMU

KWMU has stabilized and employees at the St. Louis NPR affiliate have settled in under interim manager Mike Dunn. Dunn went on the "Saint Louis on the Air" program a little over a week ago and handled listeners calls for an hour outlining his view of the station's role. If you wish to hear the entire program and see his statement to listeners and supporters you can go the station's web page.

There are reports too the station will soon start an evening local news magazine. Already, management has done away with the 7:04 p.m. newscast after the highly rated "All Things Considered".

In the meantime, the amount of interest in this story and hits on this blog have been much more than I would have anticipated. Good journalism precludes reporting on one's self but in this case I am going to make an exception. So, please indulge me.

This blog has had more hits on this story than anything else I've posted in the last three years. Hits have come repeatedly from the West Coast, East Coast and all over the nation and the readers are returning for more information. So, thank you for taking the time to check in here.

Fallout at KWMU

Meteorologist Dave Murray is one of the first casualties of the management change at KWMU. Murray had been delivering drive time forecasts for the station since long time meteorologist Ben Abell retired last fall.

Reportedly, critics of Murray did not believe his employment at the local Fox TV affiliate, fit with KWMU's affiliation with NPR.

June 03, 2008

Wente Terminated at KWMU

KWMU Radio General Manager Patty Wente was relieved of her management responsibilities on Monday afternoon. The Chancellor of the University of Missouri St. Louis, Tom George, informed the staff of the decision about five o'clock and was accompanied to the station by two university attorney's where he met with employees.

In the meantime, the station reportedly will continue to function as usual until a permanent GM can be hired. George told employees the General Manager at sister station KBIA in Columbia, Mike Dunn, will take the job in an interim role. KBIA plays predominantly classical music, but he is not expected to change the all news/talk format that has been successful at KWMU.

Wente apparently is not yet willing to talk to reporters about the development.

If you would like to read the UMSL media release you can see it by clicking here.

The St. Louis print media played the story as you would have expected. The Riverfront Times which broke the story of the original investigation, splashed the development on it's web site and made reference to it's initial story in saying Wente had been "fired". (The link is below this in my original post).

The St. Louis-Post Dispatch buried the story in it's entertainment section. The logic for this probably being the Post didn't want to admit the weekly "Alternative" newspaper kicked it's butt journalistically with the original feature. And the St. Louis TV stations were out in the cold until they saw it in print.

My "Project" Is Complete

The project I have been working on is complete. Actually, it wasn’t so much a project as the chance to get away from work for a week. I spent it in one of my favorite destinations...Las Vegas.

I was ready for it. I had burnt out in my job and little things were becoming big things. I knew I was ready for some time off about a month ago but I was too stubborn to take a day of vacation. I guess the thing that told me I needed to get away was snapping at my boss not once but twice. Fortunately for me (I hope) was that he just took it in stride and let it roll off his back. Are things at work that bad? No not really. It was just after going five months with only one day off I was letting fools get to me and I was sinking to their level. This included both customers and co-workers.

So, the trip was a success for me both mentally and in a monetary way. I got lucky playing Black Jack in four lengthy sessions and only lost part of it back betting on sports teams.

Perhaps the highlight of the trip was going to Zion National Park. It is about 160 miles northeast of Las Vegas in Utah. I had heard it was spectacular and it lived up my expectations. It is comprised of sheer cliffs that go straight up from the floor of the canyons for over five thousand feet. And the vistas are breath taking. There is an area that impressed me more than any of the others named The Big Bend. If you’ve ever seen the movie The Electric Horseman part of it was filmed there.

So, that’s why I haven’t written much lately. I will share more when I have additional time. I will also have more for you on a post I did earlier this month titled “Trouble at a local radio station”.

May 29, 2008

I'm Still Here

I am around, but haven't had much chance to post lately. I am in the middle of a project and will tell you more about it when I can.

I am still reading, listening and watching and there are a lot of interesting things going on in the local media. The most unprofessional, abusive and irresponsible by the so called TV station weather "experts". I will post when I have more time.

Spring...Where Are You?

This is the winter that just wont give up. It has rained more in the last four weeks than it did all last summer. And the temperature is cool enough that the furnace is running each morning when I get up.

I also realized while it is almost the middle of May I have mowed my lawn just twice this year. Usually I start mowing it the first week of April and continue until fall. But, not this year. I hope when it does warm up we don't go straight from 50 and 60 degree days to 90 degree days.

Trouble at a Local Radio Station

The purpose of this blog is to provide a forum for criticism of the news media (especially the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, hence the name "The Anti-Post").

But, the Post isn't the only newspaper in the St. Louis area. The Riverfront Times is the local "alternative" paper. This week it has a critical article about the St. Louis NPR affiliate's general manager.

If you would like to read the article about KWMU and Patty Wente please click here.

and Yet AGAIN

I have to laugh. I just looked at the TV sports lineup for this afternoon and see TBS is the latest media outlet to jump on the Yankees ratings bandwagon. TBS positions itself as a national outlet but it is based in Atlanta. My guess is most Atlantans would rather watch the Braves than a bunch of overpaid egotists from Gotham City. Go Indians!

The Hooser Neighbors are Outta Here!

They are gone. Thank God! The Hoosier neighbors who had been living next door for six months moved out after dark on a Friday night and have not come back. These are the ones who still had the Christmas lights up on the house even though it's been four months since Christmas. I knew all but two of them were gone, but the news that the father and daughter also left was excellent news!

Now, another family has moved in. For the week they have lived here they have been friendly and quiet. And that is just fine. One of the new renters was pleasant and came over when I saw her outside for the first time.

But, she told me something disturbing about the former tenants. Apparently, when her family moved in there were FOUR cats and a ferret left behind in the house without food or water. And you can imagine what the animals did to the house. There is now a large roll of carpet lying alongside the rental property. But, in a way it's justice for the owners of the house who rented it to the low life Hoosiers last fall.

April 26, 2008

And AGAIN

This afternoon the Fox Network is being creative with it's Game of the Week schedule. Guess who they are showing to most of the nation? Why it's none other than the freakin' New York Yankees. I'm sure most people outside of the rotten apple will be rooting for the Cleveland Indians to spank them.

The Weekend is Here

I sure was glad I didn't have to go to work this morning. It wasn't bad work wise, but the stress level is way up again. My boss apparently is unwilling to tell his superiors no and as a result we are overwhelmed. The number of projects we are juggling at one time is more than we have ever had before. Apparently upper management thinks we are sitting on our collective asses. And there's no relief in site. In the next week a very large project that will impact me directly begins. I can hardly wait. But, that is why they call it work and why they pay me. The beer is going to taste mighty good tonight.

April 23, 2008

They're On AGAIN

How many times is enough? ESPN is showing the New York Yankees yet again this evening. I guess the so called producers at the satellite station claiming to be the "leader in sports" must think the whole world loves the team from the Bronx.

Well, guess what? No one born south of Boston or west of the Hudson could give a rat's butt. But, since all the children who work at ESPN in production grew up in the city America resents, you are going to have to suffer this mediocre bunch a lot more this summer.

April 12, 2008

Change May be in the works

The references to my hoosier neighbor's may be coming to an end. It appears as if several if not most of them may have moved out. The loud car is no longer there and vehicles are no longer coming and going at all hours. Even the toilet that had been sitting on the side of the house for over a month is gone. Stay tuned for more details.

Check This Out

You may have a hard time finding it now because it's a seasonal beer...but Leinenkugel Brewing Company out of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin has a fantastic brew named Big Butt.

It's a malty Doppelbock and is very dark in color. It has an interesting note of chocolate as it goes across the back of your tongue and heads down your throat. I wish there were more available but Leinie's only brews it between January and March.

The name is not someones referral to an ex-wife or old girlfriend, but rather the image of two Rams knocking heads in battle.

What a Week

No I don't mean that in a good way. Personally, things are fine. It was just the workplace. My co-workers wanted to sit on their collective asses and play. Meantime, the boss kept asking me questions and every time I gave him an answer he would ask me to take care of it. I don't mind doing my fair share or more, but it pisses me off when others have started their weekend on Friday morning.

Oh well, it's behind me now and I have the time to do what I enjoy...like this blogging thing.

An Awesome Basketball Game

As much as it chokes me as it comes out of my gut, I have to tell the Kansas Jayhawks congratulations on their national championship last night in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. As a Missouri fan it is particularly difficult to tell the low life from Lawrence nice job.

But, they pulled it out in the clutch. Granted Memphis couldn't hit a free throw to save itself, but KU hit the shots it had too. The nothing but net three point shot with two second left by Mario Chalmers was a dagger to the heart of the Tigers. I knew at that point, Memphis would be toast in OT. And Kansas did just that dismantling a beaten Memphis ball club.

I read some of the East Coast writers articles this morning on the Internet and have to disagree with the assessment of a Memphis choke. Memphis did hit a few shots, but KU just kept coming after them every time down the floor. It is the best NCAA championship game I have ever seen and is among the best I have ever seen at any level. So...um...uhum, congrats KU.

Hurry Spring

It's April, but it feels like it did four weeks ago. The temperatures in the morning are gradually getting warmer, but it still isn't as warm as it should be. And the rains just keep coming. It rained cats and dogs Monday night and I had a small stream across my basement floor into my laundry room where there is a drain.

My golf league played the first round yesterday afternoon. It was a little chilly but not too bad. But, you could tell it was wet by the "squish, squish, squish" every time someone took a step in the fairway.

But, good news is forecast. It's supposed to be in the 60s on Saturday with sunshine. I am looking forward to it.

The Hoosier Neighbors are Still Here

The much despised yahoo neighbors are going strong. Why just this afternoon, the Hoosier kid worked on his car and made a nuisance of himself for the better part of an hour. I have learned that he is the boyfriend of their niece who doesn't live with these losers either. But, the yahoos don't care about the rest of us. Just let the boy work on his car.

And the morons have a new yard ornament. They have a toilet that has been sitting on the side of their house for about three weeks now. Yep, every time I drive to my home I get to see a toilet on the side of their rental house. But, I shouldn't be surprised. They left a dryer in their front yard for over a month shortly after they moved in.

Please hoosier people go back to your trailer park or shack or wherever you came from and leave the rest of us alone to enjoy our lives.

They're Out of Control

The NCAA tournament is a beautiful sporting event. But, you can't enjoy it in St. Louis. Why, you ask?

Well the local CBS affiliate has decided it would rather put on some bozo weather geek than show the game in it's entirety. Instead we are being subjected to Bozo's reporting on a tornado about 100 miles away that is not even in the stations market. Why, would they do this? A reasonable question. Because the management of KMOV, owned by Belo, thinks it will enhance the stations position in the market and boost ratings. Ratings translate directly into dollars in the "Gong Show" industry. So, looks like I am going to miss some great basketball on TV. But, then again I wont miss the game. The NCAA in conjunction with CBS Sports is streaming the game live on the Internet. So, I can just tell KMOV to kiss my butt and shove Bozo where the son don't shine.

Televison News; Still an Oxymoron

The local TV newsrooms are an easy target. Why you ask? Because they are an incompetent lot when it comes to journalism. As I have explained many time, they are driven by consultants who tell them what to do. They want to fill your screen with sensational pictures and make sure you see their logo at the same time.

The local CBS wannabes spent their entire 5:00 p.m. newscast last night showing the same pictures of a local river flooding over and over and over and over and over until you just wanted to puke. Yes, the flooding of the Meramac River is a big story but not to the point where the station has the right to insult every one's intelligence. Come on KMOV get a life. The only reason I didn't turn off these idiots was I was waiting for the start of the evening session of the NCAA tournament.

To add to the lunacy these Bozos have been flying their noise makers over my house for the past two days in an effort to get a "scoop" from the sky over their perceived "competition".

It's Been a Busy Week

Sorry I haven't had more time to post this week. I have been playing catch up all week since taking Monday off of work and from life to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

I had a project at work that wrapped up yesterday and I think everyone involved was happy with the results. At least my two up expressed appreciation for the job. You know it's funny though. I passed the praise along to others involved in the move and they didn't say a word when I thanked them. No response. Not an "okay", or "your welcome" or "kiss my butt" or anything. But, I sent it by email too, so that could be why I have not received a reply.

I got a bunch of things that need to get done today but I am taking a break right now just to post. I guess I have a need for this blogging thing.

A Victim of Sub Prime Mortgages

My older brother called me a short time ago and told me he got his walking papers today. G works for Citicorp and he was told he will be out of a job in 60 days. Now he is a bright man and a good worker but he is also 57 years old.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that old white guys are having a hard time finding jobs at this point in life. One of my fears is that I too will get laid off at this stage of life.

To G I say hang in there because you are very good at what you do. And like they say; when a window closes a door opens. But, again G's age is not going to help him find a good job.

The bottom line is Citicorp is a greedy financial company and it's practices have now put a lot of hard working people out of work. Maybe the upper management and execs at Citicorp need to be held responsible for their greed. Maybe if they got let go they might not be so quick to fire those who actually busted their butts for the corporation.

In the meantime, all I can say is hang in there G better days are ahead.

A Great St. Patrick's Day

I took my first day of time off this year and it was terrific. The forecast was for rain and thunderstorms all day long but the good Lord smiled on us and the rain held off while we walked in the parade. Thanks to my friends P & B for letting me walk with their clan in the annual dog-town parade.

After the parade we went over to C's house in Dogtownto celebrate the day and she was very gracious. In fact everyone there seemed to enjoy the day off. What also amazed me was the amount of food brought in to the party. It was all excellent.

After that I hooked up with my great friends V&A for dinner and drinks at an Irish pub. Again, they and their family were just wonderful company to be around. Their granddaughter K is a lot of fun and and really a neat woman to talk to.

I really like St. Patty's Day and the only downside is it's over until next year. Still, I have fond memories of this year's celebration. Erin Go Bragh!!

Tomorrow Is Another Day

Aaaaaarrrrgh....it's been one of those days I would just as soon forget.

It started out alright but then I had a secretary from another department, who isn't remotely a manager give me an order this morning. I thought about emailing her but quickly forgot about it because of her political connections. Then the two projects I have been working on quickly turned to crap as I tried to figure out what was wrong. The bottom line is I researched the problem on the Internet with one of our vendors but never came close to solving it. I will have to beg for help from the vendor's support team tomorrow. Gee, I can hardly wait.

Then the second project turned to mud as the help I had been promised never materialized. Again back to the research documents, but they were worthless.

Then I get back to my desk and this guy I work with was pissed off because a bunch of us planned to get together for lunch tomorrow but he was unhappy because he had been to the same restaurant on Monday. Never mind the fact he didn't bother to invite anyone else. But, he bitched up a storm about it. I finally turned my back on him after trying to discuss the matter in a reasonable manner. I should have told him to go F himself.

After lunch I got a phone call from a customer wanting to know why I had not done something. So, I told him I would check into it. It turns out they never submitted an order. Fortunately one of my higher ups told me not to do anything. (I just hope he remembers that tomorrow when the secretary who works for the customer calls and bitches.

Then I got handed a job I had absolutely no clue about. Again the higher up said wait for more information from another department. I am glad he told me that, but I know in the long run I am going to get stuck with the job and the other department will try to spin it even though they dropped the ball.

I thought this day can't suck much more? But, oh it did. I had two meetings this afternoon. The first was supposed to be quick and the committee, for the record, is productive. But, two new people who were put in the group by senior management decided they would carry on a conversation about the topic and ignore everyone else who has been working on this for the past two years. I was mega pissed and dumped out the first chance I could get.

The second meeting was better but it was a pep talk for the corporation. There was faint praise from a manager, but it was the same old song and dance.

As I headed for home I thought things can only get better. But, traffic was all jacked up and the trial offer I received from On-Star to use it's expensive phone service was a bust. I tried to carry on a conversation with a family member but she told me my call was full of static and it ended up with the call being dropped. I called On-Star back and told them the problem, but after being on hold for about ten minutes I said the hell with it. I will call them back at another time. Or maybe just not use the phone service again and dump them when they start asking for money.

I finally pulled into my driveway and I thought peace at last. But, noooooo. The Hoosier neighbor's friend was out working on the piece of crap he calls a car. And there is still no muffler on it. Just a very loud car that disturbs the the whole neighborhood. The moron finally shut it down after dark to my and the rest of the neighbors relief. You know, it's not personal on his part in any way. He is just a dumb Hoosier that hasn't been told any better. But, he should know better. He probably is pushing 25 years old.

I have had enough for one day and am going to bed now. Like Scarlett O'Hara said "tomorrow is another day".

Hayseed Neighbor Update

Well it's a nice warm day here and the renters next door came out of the house in all their hoosier glory. The first thing they did was turn their retarded baby loose on the neighborhood. This is the one that doesn't talk but just screams. I don't know if the kid is really retarded but he must be about two and doesn't say any words yet, just screams or cries at everyone.

Then while I am trying to watch a golf tournament on TV one of their friends comes over to work on a piece of crap car. The car has no license plates or mufflers on it. So every time this kid fires it up, it makes enough noise to be heard three blocks away. Why do they let their loser friends come over and disturb the peace in our neighborhood? Why doesn't this person just stay in their trailer park.

Finally, this is March second. But, guess what is still hanging on the rental house? None other than all the Christmas lights these yahoos put up in November.

I wish they would all move back to whatever trailer park from which they escaped.

White Hawk IPA Revisited

In mid January I wrote about White Hawk IPA and said it was okay but nothing special. After attending a beer tasting a week or so ago, I have changed my mind. This product from Mendocino brewing in California is awesome. I have drank several more and the way the hops linger on the palate are excellent. If you are a hop head I would recommend you try it if you have never tasted it. If you have tasted it then you know how good it really is. My apologies to the brew master for my earlier review.

A Double Standard

The St. Louis Cardinals have a double standard. This week they let utility player Scott Spezio go after he was indicted by a grand jury in California.

It seems Spezio has issues with alcohol and got himself in trouble with Orange County deputies. According to reports Spezio allegedly punched a neighbor after he ran his car into a fence in December after drinking. The Birds immediately released him and will pay him two plus million dollars this year. And then buyout his contract next year.

But the double standard lies in the way the Cardinals treat different individuals. Redbird manager Tony LaRussa was convicted of driving while under the influence last year and the Cardinals rewarded him by renewing his contract for two years.

It seems to me LaRussa should be canned too. If the Cardinals are serious about alcohol and substance abuse then LaRussa needs to be fired for his drunk driving.
