Another Night Another Choke in Colorado

As if it wasn't bad enough that the St. Louis Cardinals blew up on Tuesday night, the same thing happened last night. The Cardinals gave away leads to the Colorado Rockies of 5-0 and 7-4 only to lose 8-7. Once again the hitters did there job racking up 16 hits. But, the bullpen did NOT do it's job and blew up again for a second consecutive night. The goat last night was Jason Motte who blew the save. Actually it was only his first blown save of the year, so I am going easy on him. But, in general the bullpen has been feckless the last several games. And while I was critical of Ryan Franklin yesterday, to be fair he has had only blown 2 saves all year.

Baseball is a marathon not a sprint, so hopefully the Birds will right the ship today when they wrap up their visit to that haunted house called Coors Field. They still have the best talent in the NL Central, but I am starting to question their heart and desire to win.

A Win and a Loss

My beloved Tigers stepped up this weekend and beat a decent Kansas State team out in Manhattan 38-12. Danario Alexander continues to impress with his speed and agility. He may be one of the most under rated wide outs in the nation. And the defense did a great job too. Sean Weatherspoon dominated the Wildcats and helped lead the Tigers fourth quarter goal line stand that rebuffed K-State on four trys. The Tigers are back home this weekend against Iowa State at Faurot Field and will be looking to improve on their 6-4 record.

Sunday was not as good a day for St. Louis football fans. The Rams played well in the first half but ultimately lost to a very good New Orleans Saints team, 28-23. The Rams are now 1-8. The Rams were tied at half 14 apiece, but New Orleans ran the second half kickoff back for a touchdown and never looked back. Up next for the Rams, the defending NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals in the Valley of the Sun.

Congratulations to the Steelers

I'm a little tardy in posting this but congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers on their come from behind win over the Arizona Cardinals! I had cheered for the Big Red as I posted on Sunday, and was disappointed the Cardinal defense gave up the final touchdown without much time to play. But, the Steelers made the plays they needed and deserved to win.

The intercepted pass by James Harrison near at the end of the first half was obviously the key to the ballgame. Again, the Steelers made a big play that influenced the outcome of the game.

In my book this is one of the best Super Bowls ever. And, I have seen every one of them starting with the Packers and Chiefs in 1967. (I was in eighth grade). In my book the 2000 Super Bowl (XXXIV) won by the Rams over the Titans is the best ever. That was the game that ended with Michael Jones making "The Tackle" on the Rams one yard line to preserve the victory.

Go Big Red

I will be rooting for the Arizona Cardinals later this afternoon when they take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Why you ask?

Well for starters I spent a number of Sunday afternoons at old Busch Stadium in downtown St. Louis before the Big Red departed for the desert in 1988. I hate to admit it, but I still watch them when their games are available locally.

I also am a fan of Kurt Warner, since he was the quarterback in Super Bowls 34 and 36 when St. Louis made it's only appearances in the history of the championship game. St. Louis won in 2000 beating the Tennessee Titans and lost in 2002 to the New England Cheaters, er...Patriots.

Finally the Cardinals are a touchdown underdog and I always like rooting for the little guy. So, GO BIG RED!
